The latest tablet Aakash 2 or Ubislate 7 has emerged as the better alternative to its old version Aakash, which was developed as part of the government’s plan to provide school children with a tablet PC.
Unlike the cheapest $35 (Rs 2,500) Aakash, the commercial version developed by DataWind known as Aakash 2 or officially branded as Ubislate 7 has emerged as a better alternative though it was Rs. 500 more. The defects in Aakash like slow processor speed, weak battery life and poor connectivity were taken care of in the latest version.
The device opened for pre-orders on its website is scheduled for release next month but the rush is unimaginably high for the company which may not ship 500,000+ pre-orders it received in the first two weeks of opening its online sale. Though the company promised to deliver at home within a week, online buyers may have to wait for longer now.
For a quick glance, the improved version of Aakash has both GPRS support and better Wi-Fi connectivity speeds and 2 USB 2.0 ports and provision for 3G modem. It can also facilitate 150,000 Apps and several video games.
In addition, with a front-camera, a more powerful 3, 200mAh battery that can support 4 to 5 hours of battery life compared to 3 hours in Aakash, Ubislate 7 also promises a faster Cortex A8-700MHz processor. Besides, it will have a graphics processor and a HD video processor, 2GB onboard Flash storage. For the Indian market, there is no alternative but a better connectivity will solve the problem of poor connectivity and birdge the gap between rural and urban divide in tech reach.
